An FIR has been filed against former India cricketer Vinod Kambli and his wife Andrea by the Bandra police, after their domestic help alleged that the couple had confined her and refused to pay her the promised salary.

The complaint against the Kamblis was filed by Soni Nafesing Sarsal, 30, who told the police that they hired her over two years ago as a caretaker for their toddler daughter. She said that the couple promised her Rs 10,000 a month, but never gave her the full amount. Vinod Kambli, 43, and his wife have denied the allegations and say that the woman was irregular in attendance and that they paid her accordingly. They also said they decided to sack her when they learnt she was into drugs.

In her complaint, Sarsal alleged that the Kamblis misbehaved with her two days ago and also confined her to a room. Based on this, the police registered the FIR under Sections 343 (wrongful confinement), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intent). “We will speak to both the parties and decide on the next course of action,” said a Bandra police officer. Sarsal also alleged that she was assaulted, and apart from the non-payment of her full salary, the couple took her cell phone and original documents. When Mirror called Sarsal’s residence on Sunday, a relative answered and claimed that she was unwell and unable to speak. “She was being verbally abused by the couple. They also slapped her when she demanded her salary on Wednesday. She was also locked and confined to a room for two days when she demanded that she be allowed to go home,” said the relative who did not wish to be named.

The Kamblis, however, have denied all the allegations. “We hired Sarsal to take care of our daughter. But she was inconsistent in attendance. She only reported for work around 10 days in a month,” Andrea Kambli told Mirror. “We also decided to remove her from the job when we got to know that she was addicted to drugs. The allegations are not true. I will share CCTV footage with the police to show that she was not confined in our home,” Andrea added.

DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni confirmed that an FIR had been filed in the case on Saturday, and said that an investigation into the allegations will be conducted.
